The focus of the workshop was on Orientalism and the European conceptual framework of thinking about other cultures and its relation to internal debates within Christianity. In the first day there was a close reading and discussion of the article The Future of the Present. This illustrated the promises and pitfalls of Edward Said’s Orientalism and then showed the critical need to reformulate the project initiated by Said.
