Seminar: Yukti: A Dialogue - "False Consciousness and the Nature of Experience"
This seminar focuses specifically on what notion of 'experience' underlies the Marxist conception of 'false consciousness' and questions whether the impact of colonisation may be characterised as producing a 'false consciousness'. In addition we explore alternative notions of experience found in the Indian traditions and the implications of these ideas in the realm of political thought.
Invited around the discussion table are:
Dr. S.N.Balagangadhara (director Research Centre Comparative Science of Cultures and India Platform, Ghent University, Belgium)
Dr. Akeel Bilgrami (Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Heyman Center fot he Humanities, Columbia University, New York)
Dr. Vivek Dhareshwar (Independent scholar from Bangalore).
Yukti was launched in January 2010 as an attempt to establish a new pattern for academic exchange. This experiment arrose from dissatisfaction with the usual pattern for academic seminars today which tend to 'show-case' contemporary academic research, but do little to further research. Students, who are future researchers, only witness the end product of research with the scholars' paper presentation, but rarely get an opportunity to witness the reasoning process behind a scholar's work. Yukti seeks to illuminate this aspect by setting up a dialogue between scholars whose intense engagement with each other's perspectives and stiff challenge to unexamined propositions allows students to understand how to raise effective questions and to reach solutions to problems. This seminar hopes therefore to be a novel kind of pedagogic exercise.
Yukti will host additional talks by the speakers at various locations to familiarise the audience with the on-going work of each of these scholars.
